BACKGROUND
The current American health care
system is
in trouble. Costs continue to rise, yet quality of outcomes
is poor. The U.S is ranked 1st in the world in health care costs,
yet
near the bottom of developed countries in measures of mortality,
patient satisfaction, and access.
The system is built
on a
model
of “fee for service” that rewards the number of patients seen in
the office, not the quality of care. To stay financially viable, most
medical practices try to see as many patients as possible as
efficiently as possible. This requires additional staff to absorb
the workload, typically leaving the doctor with 10-15 minutes per
visit. Although this system may allow practices to survive
financially, it comes at a high cost by cheating both doctors and
patients of the most necessary ingredient for quality health care:
time.
My practice will be designed to maximize the value of our
doctor-patient relationship. In order to accomplish this, I will
use innovative practices like electronic medical records, online
appointment scheduling and online visits to help keep overhead to a
minimum. I will choose not to contract with insurance, so that I
can focus on your needs, not those of the insurance company. I
will limit the number of patients in the practice to a few hundred
instead of a few thousand.
By doing these things, I will be
able to spend significantly more time with you, and provide
personalized, holistic care that should result in increased quality and
satisfaction. I see the practice as a blend of the best of
old and new: old fashioned relationships with modern resources and
technology.
